Hi Gang,

I just picked up 64 El Camino with no engine/transmission. I have acquired quite a collection of inlines engines and performance parts. I have 292, 250, and 230 engines.

I know 12 bolt Tom has used a 292 and am curious and looking to those that have inline 6s in A bodies, if given the choice for a turbocharged daily driver would you choose a 292 or a 250? I am less worried about horsepower and more concerned about drivability. I only have experience with 250s in Camaros and 292s in trucks...but I know that folks have experienced both in A bodies and so I look to you for advice before going down this road. Especially those that have had both engines in the same car.

Regards,
Rick

I can't think of anything less driveable (until you get it worked out) than a new DIY turbo system.

Thanks for the quick response...

And to add insult to injury, it will be Megasquirt controlled dual TBI. So there will be a lot of dialing in.

The whole turbo setup came from a working implementation of a carb'd 250. SPA turbo manifold, CX racing turbo. So it was operational.

The issue with the 292 might be the height of the engine. Either way I'll follow what you do if you will post it here. Several years ago I started a turbo, TBI, 292 project with a Megasquirt For my '68 Chevy flatbed. I never finished it. It's all piled around here somewhere.

Beater,

I am in Northern Nevada as well...

I have a 65 C20 with a 292 and was going to do all the afore written things to it but then came accross the El Camino in Carson, which gave me a lighter weight blank canvas. I have a Goodwrench 292 shortblock from a surplused BLM truck and a 230 with all new .40 over 250 inerds. The 230 doesn't need the 40 over but got the whole 250 kit (bearings, crank, rods, pistons, etc) for $200 and the 230 for $100.

So I am at a crossroads. I am hoping that someone here has been through this so I might not have to suffer the same trials and tribulations.

I know that's being lazy but I just joined the inline craze and some of ya'all have been at this for years.

Regards,
Rick
