I had been planing on putting the 292 I am building in a 39 Chevy coupe I have. I just got back my mothers 77 Camaro, (she sold it in 1980)needs a full restore. I am thinking of switching projects and starting on it instead. It has a worn out 250 in it now. What kind of issues have you guys seen with trying to put a tall 292 in that type Camaro? Hit me with the pros and cons please.
Thanks

Elm-

I've got a 292 in my 63 Chevy Biscayne...dunno how the hoodline compares, but mine fits with about an inch of clearance, with an Edelbrock Pro-Flo (the triangular shaped one), an Offy manifold, and an Edelbrock 4bbl. With a stock carb, I don't think the mill would fit.

I know Tom Lowe put a 292 in his '65 El Camino. It was tight but went in. I am not sure how much more room in the Chevelle than the Camaro. Best way is to take the carb off of the 250 and measure from the top of the intake to the underside of the hood. If you had something collapsable inside of each other that you could set on the base, close the hood and then open, remove and measure the collapsed length. Shouldn't be too hard to figure the difference in height from the 250 to the 292. Other than the passenger side mount, possibly oil pan, the rest shouldn't be too hard to accomplish. Would make for a very nice project when finished.

the 292 is 1 3/4s taller then the 250s So if you have more then
3 inchs of clearance over the air cleaner to hood ,You should be fine.

it was hard to find a air cleaner to fit under the stock hood on mine. the best option is to go to a remote air filter. tom
